Links in messages don't work,
tried all the steps such as restarting thunderbird in safe mode, disabled add-ons, check the html. Tried backup, can't find profile manager or anything that says profile.

You need to set the eg: Firefox browser as default.
check your Options. Tools > Options > Attachments > incoming tab or Menu icon > Options > Options > Attachments > incoming tab
under 'Content Type' look for: 'Firefox HTML document' it's 'Action' should be 'Use Firefox (default)' click on OK
