Can't retrieve mail. Error: Cannot connect to server; the connection was refused
I'm new to Thunderbird. Yesterday it worked fine but today I get an error and can't retrieve any mail. I have TorBirdy and Enigmail addons and no other addons. I have a VPN and am on linux but no other firewalls or antivirus programs. I have two different email accounts on Thunderbird utilizing different servers and both get the same error.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I should have also mentioned that I have tried disconnecting the VPN and the error continued.
Did you check with your email provider whether they have a problem?

I did and they're both fine.
I've tried starting Thunderbird in safe mode to no avail. As far as I know my distro doesn't have a safe mode to try but I haven't installed anything in the last day or so. I don't have a Windows machine to try safe made on.
