How to I activate the "insert link" function which accepts a saved/pasted address for highlighted text in V31.0?
It worked perfectly in prior versions, but now in this version 31.0, when I try to paste a saved URL as a link into highlighted text, it returns this error message: "(No named anchors or headings in this page)", and refuses to accept a paste. Note that this is broken both when clicking on the little blue screen icon as well as when selecting "insert/link" from the function bar. I've looked everywhere for some sort of new configuration option to correct this, but to no avail. What am I missing?

I selected some text, then Ctrl-L, and pasted a URL of the form http://www.somewhere.net/page.htm#ANCH without any problems. I can only guess that you got that error message if you were trying to insert a link to a non-existent anchor that refers to a location in the message you are composing.
Does the problem remain in safe mode? Hold Shift when you launch TB.
Post the URL here if you like, and obscure any details that are private.
No, that's not the issue. I am writing simple text in an outgoing message, then highlighting a few words (such as "click here to visit the site"), then when I use any of the three methods to assign a link to those highlighted words (Ctrl L, insert/link, or clicking on the little blue screen icon), the normal window opens with a box to insert the URL, but when I try to PASTE such a saved URL into that box, the aforementioned error message appears. Note that I can manually TYPE a URL into that box with no problem, but version 31 will not allow me to PASTE one. I've always successfully used exactly that procedure with prior versions.
Note also that when I insert an image into an outgoing message and try to paste a link to it in the same way, the same error message pops up. That also always worked in prior versions.
Because e-mail is crucial to me, I have now re-installed a prior version (24.6.0) of Thunderbird in which this function works perfectly, so for now, problem solved. But I hope you can fix this so I can use future versions.
BTW ... I'm using Windows 7 Professional on a PC running an Intel 64-bit 7 core processor.
Are you trying to paste by right-clicking the Link Location box? If so, that error message appears, but if you simply use Ctrl-V to paste, it works properly. (See picture.)
If the Paste command appears on right-click in 24.6, then indeed there is a bug in the new version.
I've tried ctrl + v but it still doesn't work. This is very annoying.
I'm using Vista OS and TB 31.0 .
I highlight some text in a new Write message eg: link to my website Insert > link
If I right click in the 'link Location' area and select 'paste', I see the same message that you describe. If I put cursor in 'Link location' area and use 'Ctrl+V' then the url is inserted. So this second method works for me.
There is also another work around:
- highlight text in a new Write message eg: link to my website
- Insert > link
- type anything (even a single character eg: 'X') into the Link Location field.
- click on the 'Advanced Edit' button in that same window.
The 'Advanced Property Editor' window opens. select the 'HTML Attributes' tab if not already selected.
Click/select/highlight the line with the new link you just created - it will show this info
Under 'Attribue' it will say 'href' and adjacent under 'Value' , it will show what you typed into the Link Location field even if just a letter eg: 'X'
At the bottom right locate 'Value', it will also show 'X'
- highlight 'X' and right click and select 'paste'
- Click OK to close Advanced Editor
- click OK to insert link
this (ctrl v) does not work for me either. it merely replaces the highlighted text with the link. it does not transform the highlighted text into a link.

cybersailer: I only get what you describe if I type text, but no text was highlighted then Insert> Link then I put Ctrl+V into both 'Link Text' and 'Link location'.
i hear you, BUT it is inconvenient. i used to be able to add a link to text. i don't understand why it had to change. it's no favor...
Indeed ... a distinct loss of a feature I used several times each day.
Developers ... PLEASE return the simple and direct method of doing this to your next release, and thank you in advance.
