When starting firefox my home page has recently stopped loading and I get a blank page. The home page loads properly when using the home button or if i start Firefox in safe mode. Enabling the add-ons one at a time I found that it worked untill I enabled Flash. Firefox is up to date (recent update to version 44) and I have uninstalled Adobe Flash and reinstalled a fresh copy. My home page is https://uk.yahoo.com and I am using windows xp sp3. Can anybody help please?

I have done a Firefox refresh, then reset the add-on settings back to how I had them, and re-downloaded adblock plus.

So far, each time I start Firefox the home page loads as it should. I would even dare to say that it seems to be fixed.

Thank you all very much for your help and taking the time to reply to my query

Have you checked any other "flash" pages?

This is not a cure, but should let the web page load without crashing.

Flash block {web link} Never be annoyed by a Flash animation again! Blocks Flash so it won't get in your way, but if you want to see it, just click on it

If you have problems with current Shockwave Flash plugin versions then check this:

  • see if there are updates for your graphics drivers

https://support.mozilla.org/kb/upgrade-graphics-drivers-use-hardware-acceleration

  • disable protected mode in the Flash plugin (Flash 11.3+ on Windows Vista and later)

https://forums.adobe.com/message/4468493#TemporaryWorkaround

  • disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin

Thanks for your reply.

I have tried changing the home page to Bloomberg which uses Flash and this seems to load OK but when changing back to UK.Yahoo the problem is still present.

I have Flash set to 'ask to activate' but the problem only disappears when Flash is completely disabled.

Grahics drivers are up to date and disabling protected mode in the Flash plugin made no difference.

I haven't tried disabling hardware acceleration yet but up untill a few days ago all worked well and as far as I am aware nothing has changed except the automatic update of Firefox to version 44.

More system details next to your initial posting Misc - User JS: Yes

Check the contents of that user.js file which is in your Profile folder.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (3-bar Menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: 3-bar Menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Hello the-edmeister,

I have found the file you refer to, the contents are as follows:-

user_pref("network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server", 4); user_pref("nglayout.initialpaint.delay", 600); user_pref("content.notify.interval", 600000); user_pref("content.max.tokenizing.time", 1800000); user_pref("content.switch.threshold", 600000);

Is this what you mean?

Hello cor-el,

It works OK in safe mode, and continues to work as I enable the add-ons untill I enable Shockwave Flash at which point the home page stops loading automatically.

I have now tried disabling hardware acceleration and it makes no difference

You can delete the user.js file and reset the involved prefs on the about:config page via the right-click context menu to the default value or delete the prefs.js to reset all prefs.

Does it also work if you set the Flash plugin to "Ask to Activate" on the "3-bar Menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Plugins" page and aren't enabling the Flash plugin when prompted?

  • plugins are not affected by Firefox Safe Mode

You can check for problems with current Shockwave Flash plugin versions and hardware acceleration in Firefox and try this:

If Shockwave flash is set to either 'always activate ' or 'ask to activate' then my uk.yahoo homepage does not load automatically. If it is set to 'never activate' then the homepage loads automatically as it should.

I have renamed (just in case) the user.js file and reset the preferences concerned to the default settings in about:config. Unfortunately the problem persists, although the home page does seem to load faster when using the home page button.

Flash and drivers are all latest versions and up to date.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.
