Using Thunderbird 52.

The message list is too small, and the font is too hard to read. The old Theme Font and Size Changer has stopped working. The new one, after installing, quitting, and restarting, does not seem to work either. It is supposed to be available under the tools menu-- it is not-- or an app menu button-- looked everywhere and can't find it.

You can install an older version over the existing version (disable autoupdates for the meantime), and they are all available, e.g. the mac installer for the EN-US version of TB 52.5.0 is here:
