On the older versions of Thunderbird you are able to see how many new emails and also the total number of emails in a file. In the newest version it only shows the number for the unopened ones. Is there a setting I am missing that would also give me the total email count in that file?

View > Layout > Folder Pane Columns

That will toggle the columns on the folder pane to visible/invisible. Next, right-click the header of the Name column, which is always visible, then click the Total option to add the Total column to the folder pane.
