Hi,

I moved from Windows to Linux and from Outlook to Thunderbird.

I used to save my outlook mails on a central harddisk to let other people in the network have access to the same info.

Is there a way to do that with TB too. To save the emails from TB to the harddisk and my colleagues can access it and use it on Windows computers.

Thank you.

Klaus

Sure there is. Simply select the messages you want to share on the network and use the File > Save As option or press Ctrl-S and select a network-accessible storage location as the target. Each selected message will be be saved as a separate eml file.

Hi Stan, thanks for the info. The point is that the other members of the team use Windows and outlook. I know I can save my TB messages as eml but the others cannot open it. Therefore I asked if there is a way to save that both of us TB and outlook can access. I know there is a possibility to save as PDF but this is only the last option. Thanks Klaus

Hi there! Have a look at this article. [removed spam link] You may share this with our co-workers. It's strange that that Microsoft's own app cannot open EML files as they are the ones who created it. I hope the above article worked. As ur problem is concerned you can save mails in different formats by using 'Save As' after right clicking on the mail. But it would be best if saved as an EML file.

What are you guys talking about!? Microsoft Outlook (the desktop email client) opens EML files just fine.

Well I though it did Stan, at least recent versions. Older versions were stuck in the proprietary PST format.

Outlook still uses proprietary file formats for its data storage, not eml, but it does open eml files just fine. It has been doing it since v2003. In v2010-2019 it is registered as an application that can be associated with eml files, so it can be easily set as the default application for eml files. In v2003 & 2007, the Registry had to be tweaked manually to make it the default application for eml files, and they opened it just fine thereafter.

Hi again,

thanks for all the info. I had a closer look at the problem now and found that if I save the email on my laptop everything is ok.

As soon as I save the email to our NAS system then the saved email file is always empty. Of coures if the file has 0 B then there is nothing to open.

Thanks for your help.

Klaus
