Use extensions to add features to Firefox

Extensions are a type of Firefox add-on. This article describes how to find, install and manage extensions in Firefox.

What are extensions?

Extensions are Firefox add-ons that provide additional functionality to Firefox.

People all over the world have developed thousands of extensions for Firefox. There are extensions that allow you to block advertisements, download videos from websites, integrate more closely with websites like Facebook or Twitter, and add features you see in other browsers.

How to install extensions

  1. Click the menu button Fx89menuButton, click Add-ons and themes and select Get Add-ons.
  2. To see more information on a Featured Add-on, click it. You can then click the green Add to Firefox button to install it.To install a recommended extension, just click the Add to Firefox... button.
    • You can also search for specific extensions by using the search box at the top. You can then install any extensions you find with the InstallAdd to Firefox... button.Add-ons Win1Add-ons Mac1Add-ons Lin1Add-ons Win2Add-ons Mac2Add-ons Lin2
  3. Firefox will download the requested extension and may ask you to confirm that you want to install it.
  4. Click Restart NowRestart Firefox if it pops up. Your tabs will be saved and restored after the restart.

How to change extension settings

Some extensions have settings you can change.

  1. Click the menu button Fx89menuButton, click Add-ons and themes and select Extensions .
  2. Select the extension you want to edit and click the More link.
  3. Click the OptionsPreferences button.

    • If the OptionsPreferences button is not available, the extension does not offer settings to change.
    • Click on its homepageRight-clickHold down the Control key while you click on it and select Visit Home Page to look for documentation.

How to disable or remove extensions

If you select an extension in the Add-ons Manager's Extensions panel, you can click Disable to turn it off or RemoveUninstall to remove it. For more information, see Disable or remove Add-ons.
