Get started with the Mozilla VPN extension

The Mozilla VPN extension complements the main VPN client application, offering flexible controls to secure your browsing activity and customize VPN settings for individual websites, all without altering your device-wide VPN protection.

How to install and use the Mozilla VPN Firefox Extension

  1. On the Mozilla Firefox browser, go to the Firefox Add-ons page and search for Mozilla VPN.
  2. Click Add to Firefox to install the extension.

  3. Accept the prompts to grant the necessary permissions.
  4. After the extension is installed, the VPN icon appears in Firefox’s toolbar.

Note: To use the Mozilla VPN Firefox extension, the Mozilla VPN software must be installed and running on your computer (though it doesn’t need to be connected to the VPN network). Additionally, you must be logged into your account and have an active subscription.

Activate your Mozilla VPN extension in Firefox

  1. In the top right corner of your Mozilla Firefox browser, locate and click the Mozilla VPN extension icon.

  2. Verify that the extension’s toggle is on. It should be automatically on if the Mozilla VPN software is on by the time you open Firefox. If it’s not on, flip the switch to on.

What can I do with the extension?

Within the Mozilla VPN extension interface, you will find various functions.

  • By clicking the toggle toggle on you will be able to turn VPN protection on and off for Firefox. Note that activating and deactivating the protection of Firefox via the extension will not impact your device-level protection. That continues to be managed via the Mozilla VPN client.
  • Through the always turn off checkbox, you will be able to exclude websites from VPN protection. For more information, see Disable VPN protection for a specific website.
  • With Select website location you can set a preferred location to access given websites. For more information, see Change your location for a specific website.
  • Through the VPN extension settings icon icon, you’ll be able to see all your website-level VPN preferences in a single place.
  • The Give feedback option allows you to send feedback about the extension.
  • The Reset site preferences button button allows you to set your extension preferences back to default.

Get to know your settings

You can access the Mozilla VPN extension settings by clicking the settings icon in the top right corner of the extension.

This will display the following options:

  • Website preferences: Provides a list with all the preferences you saved for the websites you use the extension on. Here you can see if the VPN protection is on or off for a given website and which preferred location you saved for any specific site.
  • Help center: Allows you to access our support center to find all the information you need about the VPN extension.
  • Contact support: Allows you to submit a request for assistance. Fill out the form, and our team will help resolve your issue.
