When you download Firefox for Android, you can choose to share limited data with Mozilla’s marketing technology partners. This helps us understand how people find and install the app, allowing us to improve Firefox while respecting your privacy.

This article explains who Mozilla’s marketing technology partners are, what data is collected, how it’s used, and how you can manage or turn off marketing data sharing on Android.

Firefox does not share information — like your browsing history, search queries, or saved passwords — with marketing technology partners. Mozilla only collects the data necessary to measure and improve our marketing campaigns.

Who are Mozilla’s marketing technology partners?

On Android, Firefox uses Adjust, a third-party service provided by the German company Adjust GmbH. Adjust helps Mozilla understand how users discover and download Firefox. The Adjust framework includes an open-source software development kit (SDK) built into Firefox and a backend service for processing data. Learn more in Adjust’s privacy policy.

What data is collected and shared on Android?

Firefox for Android shares the following types of data with Adjust:

  • Campaign measurement data:
    • When you download Firefox for the first time, an “attribution” request is sent to Adjust. This includes:
      • Campaign ID, advertising ID, and ad group ID.
      • Country, timestamp, operating system metadata, device metadata, and app version.
      • IP address: Adjust temporarily uses your IP address to see if you interacted with a Firefox ad before downloading the app. Once this check is done, the IP address is deleted immediately.
  • Interaction data:
    • Firefox measures the success of its ad campaigns by analyzing meaningful usage patterns rather than simply tracking installations.
    • Mozilla tracks conversion events, such as whether a user opens Firefox multiple times during their first week after installing it.
    • Adjust aggregates this data in a way that individual data isn’t visible, helping Mozilla understand which campaigns bring in users who actively engage with Firefox.
  • Technical data:
    • Details about your device and app, such as language/locale, country, operating system, and Firefox app version.

Where can I learn more?

For a technical overview of the data collected in the daily usage ping, see the definitions in the Glean Dictionary for Android.

How does Mozilla use this data?

Mozilla uses marketing data to:

  • Measure campaign performance: Determine when a campaign brings a new user to Firefox.
  • Improve marketing efforts: Refine how Mozilla promotes Firefox to reach more users.

Mozilla does not use marketing data to:

  • Track your browsing history, search queries, or the websites you visit.
  • Create individual user profiles or track individual user behavior.
  • Target you with personalized ads based on your activity in Firefox.
  • Sell your data to third parties or advertisers.
Mozilla’s data collection practices are based on our core values outlined in the Mozilla Manifesto. For more details, see the Firefox Privacy Notice.
