Can't choose download application to open a file - no existing articles fix the issue
Historically, I used to be able to select which application to open a download with, and Firefox remembered. Recently, it's forgotten which application I like to open .qif files with. Also, it no longer gives me an option to either:
1. Choose an application 2. Choose where to save the file.
I have selected "always ask me where to save files" in preferences. The .qif file type not listed in preferences/applications, so I cannot change which application opens them, as the file type is missing. I have followed the advice of the support articles and tried deleting mimeTypes.rdf and this has not resolved the problem.
I have tried resetting Firefox to default settings, and this was not a fix either.
I cannot get Firefox to ask me which application to open files with - any new advice is most welcome!

Try the Open With Add on
Deleting the mimeTypes.rdf will reset all download actions to the default settings.
Type about:support in the address bar and press enter.
Under the page logo on the left side you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To it’s right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.
Locate the file. Then rename or delete it. Restart Firefox.

Hi, thanks for the suggestion - but as I've stated above, I've already tried this with no success.
Can you find .qif in the mimeTypes.rdf file?
If not then Firefox should use the default application as set in the OS.
If Firefox open the file in a tab and doesn't give the option to download the file then this means that the server sends the file as text/plain (see Tools > Page Info > General). In such a case you need to right-click the link and choose "Save Link As".
