How can I rotate photos inserted into email?

I want to insert images within the email, not as an attachment, but two things go wrong... 1) vertical images are always shown as horizontal and 2) inserted images are always treated as attachments and all you see are boxes where the image is to go. I have descriptions for the images that I would like to go with that image. Very frustrating! So, is there no way to insert an image, leave it in its proper orientation, and have it actually visible in the body of the email where I place it for the recipient?

Thank you for the help, however, I must say I agree with the others. This a problem unique to Thunderbird, apparently. Whereas I agree with the premise of embedded orientation and Thunderbird is not a graphics viewer, etc., the 'solution' does nothing to explain HOW to 'manually' rotate it. I have manually rotated and saved the photo both horizontally and vertically keeping separate files for each version of the photo, and then tried inserting into the body of the email and sure enough, they both still display horizontally. I figured maybe since the vertical photo was placed horizontally in the email, perhaps saved with the opposite orientation would trick the program, but no. No matter what I have tried, Thunderbird still inserts only horizontally positioned photos for me. I've tried the same photos in Outlook, Live Mail, Windows 10 Mail, and vertical photos are inserted vertically. Only in Thunderbird does the photo insert horizontally. So frustrating, because I otherwise like the program. Is there a secret to changing the orientation manually that I am missing?

I just tried IrfanView and see that the orientation for this photo is 'top right' and is vertical. I renamed and saved it to IrfanView and then saved that file to my photo file. Insert to Thunderbird, and it displays horizontally. Ugh!

lets go basic. I see you are using windows 10.

with your keyboard press the windows key and R type pbrush and press enter

use the paint application that comes with windows to open the file you are having the issue with. Use the rotate option on the toolbar to correct the orientation. Save the file as a PNG. Import into a Thunderbird message as an image.

I just did this with an image and it worked. Your mileage may vary.

Note that a PNG is often actually a better file format for email that jpg, even though it is nowhere near as popular. People mostly do not know about it I think. I did not.

Hi Matt... thanks so much. It displayed perfectly in Paint, but nothing worked until I saved it to PNG. Now, Thunderbird is accepting it as a vertical image! That was the key. Very much appreciate all the help Matt and Toad-Hall!
