I had disabled any and all add-ons which until youtube offered its own dark skin, was only a youtube black and a youtube auto HD playback. Those both have been installed for over a year and never affected the browser behavior. I cycled them on and off in troubleshooting.

Extensions can change the new tab page; that would be the #1 vector. Please double-check the Extensions list on the Troubleshooting Information page to make sure you do not have a self-hiding extension that avoids appearing on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

Scroll down to the Extensions heading and review the table that follows.

(In Firefox 57+, extensions can no longer hide themselves.)

One rarely used vector for taking over the new tab page is a program folder infection. Check in these locations (varies for 32-bit / 64-bit):

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\defaults\pref C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\defaults\pref

Any files other than channel-prefs.js are suspicious. Remove them to a neutral location for further analysis at your leisure.

"channel-prefs.js" is the only file located in that folder you specified.

Though I have already downgraded to previous version and solved my problem myself because disgusting trolls wanted to respond to things that they had zero idea about asking to re-type text that they could just scroll up to read, instead of just waiting for an adult to be able to read some cusswords and answer me 3 days ago, I do thank you for your detailed response. I'm sure if I didn't already help myself all by myself alone, that I would have tried this advice.
