How do I move and sync my Windows contacts with Thunderbird?

I have been using Windows Live Mail for years, and I have an Outlook account with all of my Contacts which sync to my Windows Phone and Windows 7 on a laptop. Now, I have updated to Windows 10 on my PC and installed Thunderbird. I have hundreds of contacts and dozens of Groups. What do I do?

Thanks!

It's WORKING! I did a search online, and I am supposed to CHECK the box that says HTTPS. WOOHOO! Doing my happy dance.

Now about Groups.....

Hi, Matt,

OK! So, I did everything you said, and now when I open the Address Book, I see an Outlook Express group listed on the left. However, there aren't any Contacts flowing in yet. What do I do next, to get them to flow in?

I have been using Windows Live Mail for YEARS, and it's contact settings are GREAT: can group contacts into Family, Friends, Schools, Business, etc.

Also, I added the Add-On called LookOut, but I don't know how to get it to do anything. What do I do with it?

Thank you thank you thank you!

when you go to the hotmail site, are your contacts shown there? Did you set up the TZ add-on with your hotmail account information so it can sync your contacts.

When you go to the start menu and type contacts and press enter. Are your contacts show?

My contacts are shown on the Outlook site.

What is TZ?

As for LookOut, I installed the Add-On, but I don't know what to do with it or how to activate it.

Windows 10: When I go to the start menu and type contacts, my Contacts do NOT show up. They ARE in the People app. (However, they do not have my Groups like Windows Live Mail had...)

That is the add-on discussed on the blog post I linked to in my first rely. The way to sync hotmail contacts to Thunderbird.

As for LookOut, I installed the Add-On, but I don't know what to do with it or how to activate it.

If converts TNEF encoded attachments (from old versions of outlook mostly) into something Thunderbird can decipher. Otherwise it does nothing

The windows 10 people app is only a local view of your hotmail address book. So I suggest you go back and look over that information of the TZ Push add-on as that is the only way this is going to work for you.

Hi, Matt, I appreciate your patience. I really want this to work, as I have had to go back to Windows Live Mail on Windows 10, even though they are phasing it out!

I should clarify: I did enter all of the code strings you suggested in original post. So, now when I go into Thunderbird Address Book, I see a FOLDER for my Windows contacts, but nothing is in it. ALSO, when I go to the Windows 10 Start Menu and type Contacts, I AM taken to the Contacts folder, but nothing is in there either! So......I am guessing that I need to get the contacts somehow into the Windows 10 folder, and then they will automatically sync to the Thunderbird Address Book?

Are you coming back?

Hmmm, where is the reply I put here days ago... oh well.

Following some research on Windows 10 (I simply don't use it), it appears the people app is simply a reflection of what is recorded on outlook.com as your contacts. This means that you can not use the windows contact folder. The TZ push add-on is your sole choice.

On the toolbar then  Add-ons In the search box to the right type tzpush or as much as you need to see the add-on. Select it. Click install. Restart Thunderbird

On the Tools menu (alt+T) Select TX Push. (There is an option button in the add-on manager but when I press it it just messes up Thunderbird so I have to force quit it) Select TZ-Settings

Enter the server name dub-m.hotmail.com ENter your email address and password once you have that entered click Sync Address book. Once it is done it will update your status bar at the bottom of Thunderbird with TZPush is: ALLDone

HI, MATT,

I hope I can restart this conversation! ( After much trouble with Windows 10, we reinstalled the operating system. Yeah, I know. Days of reinstalls and updating settings. Ugh. Anyhoo,)

I have followed the steps in your post above. I did get the TZPush Extension and typed in the server name, etc. However, NO contacts have flowed into my Thunderbird Address Book from my Microsoft Outlook account. Hmmmm. What else can I do? I have a lot of tenacity and really want this to work. Is there something else I could type in the Server line?

Also, do I need to go back and do the things which you mentioned in your first post, entering 3 strings in Preference Name settings in Thunderbird Config Editor?

I should mention, for other people having this issue, that the TZPush service doesn't show up in a SEARCH for Add-Ons, but it does show up in a Search for Extensions! Weird.

Can't wait to hear from you!
