Flash Player hangs Firefox 18 on Win8 64 [solved - protected mode]

  1. Running Win8-64 Enterprise and Firefox 18. Some sites request installation of the Adobe Flash plug-in. If you agree and install Flash Player, Firefox becomes unresponsive and hangs. I have tried the suggested 10.x install of Flash Player, but that does not help either. The only way to get Firefox back into operation is to kill the Firefox process tree, uninstall the Flash Player pug-in and restart Firefox. I have reset Firefox, but that does not help either, I have tried disabling all installed plug-ins, but that again does not help.

Nothing seems to be able to install Flash Player without hanging Firefox. IE has no such problems. Here is some debug info:

If Flash Player is installed, I can't get this debug info, because Firefox hangs.

Looking forward to suggestions to resolve this.

  2. Try disabling the Adobe Flash Players protected mode.

I have not been too active on the forums for a few weeks but looking at the Mozilla kb articles it seems current official advice may now be to downgrade to earlier versions of Flash, something that is not working for you. Although I suspect disabling protected mode is the better solution. On some systems it may be necessary to disable Hardware Acceleration &/or update graphics drivers.

    There is

Flash 11.3 issues (was: flash 11.3 released)

  3. I did consider moving this post to the other forum Support Forum Contributors - Advanced Firefox Troubleshooting but as this may well be a top issue with Firefox 18 and Windows exposure in the main forum could be beneficial.

  5. Hi Harm,
I'm glad you got your problem solved. I think you may have mistaken this forum as a place to get help using Firefox. It is not. This forum is for discussion about contributing to support.mozilla.org.

If you have a problem with Firefox that you need help with, the best place to ask is in the support forum at http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/new

Others might see this thread, and get the impression that this forum is a place to ask for help, so I'm going to move this thread to the Lost Threads forum.

  6. If we are to move it i think the advanced troubleshooting is a better location so moving it there.

Sometimes as in this case our KB advice of downgrading / upgrading does not help, but the turning off protected mode does. IIRC some instalers leave protected mode alone and some alter it.
