I can't access my gmail messages using thunderbird when I'm away from home
When I'm at home in Scotland I can use thunderbird to access all my email accounts. When I'm at work on an offshore installation in the North Sea (internet access via a server in the Netherlands) thunderbird will access all accounts except my gmail account. I can access gmail as webmail but much prefer using an email client to keep things tidy. I've just enabled IMAP in my gmail account and tried to change the server settings in thunderbird in case using POP is causing the problem. In server settings it still says server type is POP and I can't see how to change this. Any suggestions would be most welcome. Following is the troubleshooting info for the current state:

You can't change a POP account to IMAP just by changing the server name.

Thanks for that sf, I now know how to convert to an IMAP account. Do you think this might solve the problem of being unable to access gmail via Thunderbird when away from home?
As long as the gmail account is properly set up - a nontrivial process, if you read the kb article - I see no reason why it shouldn't work through the Dutch network. It's not like you're trying to connect from a country that limits contact with the outside world.
