I have a problem with firefox 37.0.2 and fedora 21

It started a few days ago for no known reason firefox crashes and restarts - when I goto some websites - when I goto youtube and click on a video to watch

I have tried with no luck - uninstalled firefox rebooted and reinstalled it - downgraded to firefox 36 - uninstalled flash plugin

Chrome works fine and I have not come up with much in my google searches

Anyone got any ideas ?

Your crash report says you have a segmentation fault which usually occurs in Linux distributed systems due to poor co-ordination between hardware and software.

You should check: 1. Drivers are up to date and supported.

                                 2. Run a memtest & fsck to make sure memory is not at fault.

I should make note, youtube was working almost fine with the flash plugin, but displayed an error message at the top of the firefox screen. Saying it was out of date and needed updating to a new version.

It was when I removed the flash plugin that firefox started to crash when accessing a flash video on youtube.

ok just an update

I re installed flash plugin by entering at terminal

sudo yum install flash-plugin

I also updated my files etc by entering at terminal

sudo yum update

now I no longer have the out of date warning in firefox for flash plugin and all the flash sites I have tested work, but I still can't view youtube videos as firefox crashes ?

another update

to fix the problem I tried - downgrading from firefox v37 to v36 - updating firefox from v37 to v38.0.1 this didn't stop the crashing problem

so I did a full reinstall of fedora 21 / firefox / flash plugin - I reinstalled all the apps I had previously installed - youtube videos work fine now :) - the other webstie that crashed now works fine also :) - I also have no issues with flash warning messages on flash websites

no idea what the problem was, but I will keep an eye on it over the next few days

Hello!

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:

Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from mozilla.org (or choose the download for your operating system and language from this page) and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu New Fx Menu and click the close button Close 29).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.

WARNING: Do not use a third party uninstaller as part of this process. Doing so could permanently delete your Firefox profile data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. These cannot be easily recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device! See Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.

Please report back to say if this helped you!

Thank you.

Of late, I have noticed a large number of "upgrade you flash" messages. I am sure these messages are false because I always keep it up-to-date.

Flash: Grab the uninstaller from here: Uninstall Flash Player | Windows Uninstall Flash Player | Mac

Then reinstall the latest version.

In the crash reports, most of the flagged programs are Gstreamer.

Disable this for a short time, is the problem still there? Also, download the current installer.

You can try to disable GStreamer support for the HTML5 media player by toggling this pref to false on the about:config page.

  • media.gstreamer.enabled = false
