Many pages inside nytimes.com cannot display in Firefox although they display in Chrome and IE

I am trying to come back to Firefox after getting frustrated with Chrome. I installed the latest 32-bit version (64.0.1) although I also saw the same problem with the latest 64-bit version (now uninstalled.)

The New York Times (nytimes.com) home page displays properly. Many pages inside their home page do not display properly. I see the page briefly and then it disappears and the browser window is entirely a white screen. The pages display normally in Chrome and Internet Explorer. Here are some example URLs:

I have tried starting Firefox with these disabled. The problem still exists.

The only plugins installed are OpenH264 and Widevine, as automatically installed by Firefox.

I need to get this problem fixed if I am to return to FF. Thanks for your help.

It could be Adblock or your Security Software, What is it please ? You can test if it is Adblock or something else here :

SAFE MODE

In Firefox Safe mode these changes are effective:

  • all extensions are disabled (about:addons)
  • default theme is used (no persona)
  • userChrome.css and userContent.css are ignored (chrome folder)
  • default toolbar layout is used (file: localstore-safe.rdf)
  • Javascript JIT compilers are disabled (prefs: javascript.options.*jit)
  • hardware acceleration is disabled (Options > Advanced > General)
  • plugins are not affected
  • preferences are not affected

Note : you have tons of errors in your Video Card Drivers for NVIDIA Quadro M4000 driverDate: 9-18-2016 which could also be the problem.

As you can see by Disabled by User, disabled, blocked, unavailable which is just about your whole video card.

Thanks for your response.

I had already tried starting with all add-ons disabled and that had no effect.

Security software is Norton Security Deluxe.

Updating the Nvidia driver with a clean installation had no effect on the problem.

No issue opening in FF61.0.1. Sounds like if not adblocker then Norton is the other likely culprit here. Norton has a nasty habit of being a "Minder" for your internet.

Hi, I have Norton and have no problem going to the sites.

Let's retry, please : uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files , C:\Program Files(x86) & C:\ProgramData Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. (Note: This should be Pinned and run Weekly, If never done below expect 10's of gig's) Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do :

Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 61.0.1 with a Full Version Installer

Hi. I did the uninstall, clean, reinstall procedure as you suggested. The cleanup was minimal - about 25 MB the first run and about 3-5 MB on system files. I reinstalled the 64-bit version from the link you provided.

Unfortunately, the same problem exists. No change.

One possibility is there is an overlay in front of the page that is not loading completely for some reason. Another possibility is that the page uses fade-in-fade-out effects and the style rules or associated scripts are not working correctly.

If a site is generally known to work in Firefox, these are general suggestions to try when it stops working normally:

Double-check content blockers: Firefox's Tracking Protection feature and extensions that counter ads and tracking may break websites that weren't built to operate normally without the blocked components.

Do you see a shield icon toward the left end of the address bar, near the lock icon? More info on managing the Tracking Protection feature in this article: What happened to Tracking Protection?.

{Your Safe Mode test should have ruled this out, but I'll keep it for reference by others:} Extensions such as Adblock Plus, Blur, Disconnect, Ghostery, NoScript, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin or uMatrix should provide toolbar buttons to manage blocked content in a page. There may or may not be a number on the icon indicating the number of blocked items; you may need to click the button to see what's going on and test whether you need to make an exception for this site.

Cache and Cookies: When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:

  • right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info > Security > "Clear Cookies and Site Data"
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "Clear Cookies and Site Data"
  • click the padlock or "i" icon in the address bar, then the ">" button, then More Information, and finally the "Clear Cookies and Site Data" button

In the dialog that opens, you will see one or more matches to the current address so you can remove the site's cookies individually without affecting other sites.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

Testing in Firefox's Safe Mode: In its Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.)

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

I have tried with Tracking Protection enabled and disabled for the New York Times website. The problem exists regardless of the setting.

This is a brand new clean installation of Firefox per previous suggestions so wasn't the cache clean? Regardless, I cleared the cache and that had no effect.

Running in safe mode has no effect – the problem is still present.

I assumed originally that the page address wasn't changing. Is that true, or is Firefox redirecting to a different page?

Does Firefox display the "Reader" icon in the address bar (looks a bit like a page of a book) and assuming so, does it work, does it display a simplified view of the main content of the page or is that also blank/blocked?

If I am understanding your question accurately, when I click on a link to a problematic page the URL stays the same for the brief time the page displays and after it has disappeared. There is no apparent redirect. I do see something different in Chrome vs. Firefox although perhaps that is irrelevant. For example (bolding is mine):

I just noticed I did not answer your question about the Reader icon. There is one. When I click it there is a mostly-blank screen with this message:

An update: Many thanks for your suggestions, although let's stop trying to solve the problem at this time.

I have found other pages that do not display properly - e.g. one of my doctor's patient portals, and given the issues I do not feel comfortable changing our other computers over to Firefox. I don't really have the time to troubleshoot these various issues so I will have to stop trying to return to Firefox.

I was advised by a contributor on Experts Exchange to try creating a new Firefox profile. That resolved the problem.
