Spellcheck when typing not working on Thunderbird

Just lately I have found that the spellcheck when typing is not working. When I go to the menu I can spellcheck the message but Spellcheck as you type is "greyed out" even though there is a tick against it. Is there a setting I can adjust to correct this please?

Which dictionary? Is it enabled in Tools/Add-ons/Dictionaries? It can probably be fixed with a simple preference switch.
