I am running version 3.6.3 but am continually asked to install update version 3.6.23???
I have not installed the requested update because I think version 3.6.3 should already contain the 3.6.23 changes?

Firefox 3.6.3 is 20 minor versions behind Firefox 3.6.23.
The numbering for versioning goes - 3.6, 3.6.1, 3.6.2, 3.6.3 ..... 3.6.9 then to 3.6.10

Ed, technically it would be 19 minor updates behind as there was no 3.6.5 release (due to Fennec 3.6.5 at the time if I recall).
