The dialog for adding bookmarks as a widget either never comes up, or only comes up when I navigating away from Firefox, which effectively immediately closes it. So at this point there is no way for me to add a shortcut to a website on my phone's main screen

Hi

If you long press on the website address in the addressbar at the top of the screen, you should see the option to Add Page Shortcut, which will add that address as a link to your Android homescreen.
