the remember password option is turning itself off somehow. every time that I restart the computer and launch firefox it is turned off. I'm wondering if maybe the norton's anti-virus software or the comcast constantguard security software is somehow interfering with the setting.

Could be one of those doing it, but you shouldn't have both Norton and Comcast Constant Guard installed at the same time.
