I did refresh firefox to help with the slow-ness that it was bugging me about but it lost the session. i've looked online, found the thing that says to paste the sessionstore.js into the user profile, done that but it hasn't worked. i've now copied that file (from Old Firefox Data on the desktop) into every profile I can find but nothing. have I misunderstood something? please help, I need those tabs!

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

Make sure that Firefox is closed when you copy the sessionstore.js file form the "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop to the current profile folder.

You can also check for upgrade.js-<build_id> files in the sessionstore-backups folder.

You can backup the session files in the sessionstore-backups folder in the Firefox Profile Folder to make sure not to lose possible important session data.

previous.js (cleanBackup: copy of sessionstore.js from previous session that was loaded successfully)
recovery.js (latest version of the sessionstore written during runtime)
recovery.bak (previous version of the sessionstore written during runtime)
upgrade.js-<build_id> (backup created during an upgrade of Firefox)

You can copy a file from the sessionstore-backups folder to the main profile and rename the file to sessionstore.js to replace the current file (make a backup copy of the current sessionstore.js).

What the full file path to where you pasted that file?

Unless you created multiple Profiles, you should only have one "Profiles" folder in App Data/Roaming path. There will be a 2nd folder under "Profiles" in the App Data/Local path for the cache and miscellaneous related files.

C:\Users\ so it was a general user profile rather than a Firefox user profile.

i don't know where to find the App Data.

where should I have put it?

That's solved it, thanks very much. legend.

In Firefox -- Help > Troubleshooting Information -> Application Basics - Profile - Show Folder = that will open your current Firefox Profile folder
