incoming messages mark themselves as read. When they are brought into my email view they are ALL coming in showing as read. I researched and unclicked 'automatically show as read', Message pane is off - the default had it on, but still ALL messages turn 'not bold' not just one that shows in the reading pane. I'm NOT clicking on any message they come in not bold and to be clear, I have turned off the reading view and only show email subject lines. Please read carefully my question - others have asked the same but the answer does not match the question. There is a problem that you are not seeing because it seems you are assuming I want to 'preview' . Well that is a nice feature that I used to have on Thunderbird, I guess that's gone. But seriously, showing all messages placed in the inbox when placed in the inbox, as read is a defect. Again, I unclicked a'utomatically mark messages as read.' Please help - I'd like to keep thunderbird as my email program as it has been great for many years (up until the 'upgrade' yesterday.

This typically happens with an IMAP account that is accessed by other computers or phones: once a message is opened (read) on one device, it is marked as read on the other devices, even if it hasn't been opened on the other devices. Is this a possibility in your case?
