I set up firefox to use the search bar, and the first time I used firefox I typed into the search bar and it worked that way; however, each time thereafter when I typed into the search bar the text appeared in the address bar. I have tried resetting the selection without success. Any suggestions?

Which search bar? The search bar alongside the address bar shouldn't do that but the "search bar" on the 'home' or 'newtab' page may. This is the fix: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1360658#answer-1465272
