Why does the updating mechanism not work for Linux?
Firefox informed me this morning that an update was available. In the small window in which this information appeared, there was a button marked "Update Now". I pressed the button and was shown a horizontal bar with a short bar coloured dark grey moving from left to right. The text in the window said that Firefox was being updated. Unfortunately, that "updating" can go on forever with nothing to show for it. So eventually, I have to close the window myself (using the window manager).
So, my question is: Why does the updating mechanism not work for Linux?

Do you have write privileges for the Firefox installation folder?
Are you using a Firefox installation from the repositories of your Linux distribution or did you install Firefox yourself?
If you used the repositories then you need to update via your software management.
Otherwise you may have to update as a root user.
