Having used about:config to retrieve Most Visited I have made an error, how can I correct it ?
I was removing VideoConvert by myway and then found I'd lost Most Visited facility tab, so I was following a Support advice to go to browser.places.smartBookmarksVersion;7 - double click amend value to 0 - and etc. I tried this several times and some how I managed to convert the 'Type' to String instead of integer.... so I then tried to alter it back to 'integer - unsuccessfully, so now find I cannot change it back.
And I still do not have the Most Visited facility.
What should I do?
Chosen solution
Thanks
I've done that and it is now checked.
I see there is 'Customize' there - should I click that ad do something?

Hi DorothyB, it sounds as though you tried the steps in "Restore the default Smart Bookmarks Folders" but something went wrong...
Some preferences in Firefox are not "built-in" to the preferences list, but instead are generated by the code as Firefox is configuring itself. If you right-click > Reset such a preference, its type may change to string. If you close and re-open about:config after that, it usually is gone completely.
In order to restore that kind of preference, you usually need to trigger the code that sets its value. In this case, I think you can do that by exiting out of Firefox and starting it up again. If you haven't already tried that, please try that first.
It is possible to manually add an integer preference from scratch if restarting doesn't work, but hopefully that won't be necessary.
Hello and thankyou for your suggestion.
I closed as you suggested, and then re-opened but unfortunately it is still showing as String.
Can you suggest what I should do now please.
Thankyou.
Sorry, did you completely exit out of Firefox and start it back up again?
I didn't actually Log Out, I closed the window and then opened and re-entered about:config etc.
Okay, please try it this way:
(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste smart and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Right-click the browser.places.smartBookmarksVersion preference and choose Reset
(4) Exit out of Firefox using either:
- "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
- (menu bar) File > Exit
Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then start it up again.
Did Firefox re-establish the missing folders?
Thank you again.
Okay, I did as you say and it now reads Integer, so that was successful, which is great thankyou.
However, I still do not have 'Most Visited' and don't know how to retrieve that. Can you help with that please.
Is it possible that the bookmark moved to a different location on the menu? Although the about:config change will re-create a missing smart folder, it won't move it back to the default location if it's in a subfolder.
To explore manually, you can use the Library dialog. Open the Library dialog using either:
- Ctrl+Shift+b
- Bookmarks menu > "Show All Bookmarks"
Alternately, you export your bookmarks to an HTML format file, open the HTML format file as a web page in Firefox (in a tab) and then use Find (Ctrl+f) within the page to discover the current location of a bookmark or folder by title.
See: Export Firefox bookmarks to an HTML file to back up or transfer bookmarks
If you find Most Visited in there, then you can look for the same place in the Library dialog and drag the blue folder back to a more logical location.
Thank you again for your answer.
As it is now quite late (and it's been a long day) I will try your suggestions in the morning when I can concentrate better on it.
I am most grateful for your assistance, and hope that I can be successful tomorrow and you will be around so that I can report it.
Hi again
I've found Most Visited in the Bookmarks Tools - and I'd like to move it to head all my webpages.... not sure how to do that. I've read about Export Bookmarks to HTML - where it suggests moving it to Desktop - if I do that will it then be at the head of all pages?
Thank you.
Modified
No, that won't work. The HT ML format bookmarks file doesn't have any of the 3 "Smart" folders, as they aren't real folders.
Please provide a screenshot of your Firefox. I would like to see if the Bookmarks Toolbar is showing.
See this support article.
How do I create a screenshot of my problem?
It is best to use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot and make sure that you do not exceed a maximum file size of 1 MB.
Then use the Browse .... button below the Post a Reply text box to upload the screenshot.
Hmm, if it's on the Bookmarks Toolbar, is that toolbar displayed?
To turn different bars on and off:
You can use one of these methods to show the toolbar list and select the desired bars there:
- right-click a blank spot on the tab bar (or the "+" button)
- tap the Alt key to activate the classic menu bar > View > Toolbars
- in Customize mode > Show/Hide Toolbars (see: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars)
To turn on the Bookmarks Toolbar, Menu Bar, or other bars, click it on the list.
If the bar is already displayed:
Maybe Most Visited is in a folder and needs to be moved back to the "main level" of the toolbar?
Hi Edmeister Thank you for your instructions.
I hope the image helps.
Thank you
Modified
Hi DorothyB, according to the screenshot, the Most Visited folder should be the first item on your Bookmarks Toolbar.
I previously mention how to turn the Bookmarks Toolbar on and off, does that make any difference?
Hi again
Yes it's the first item, but not sure why that's relevant?
Why would I want/need to turn the Bookmarks Toolbar on or off.
Prior to removing the unwanted VideoConvert intruder, 'Most Visited' was placed just under the web address bar, which was ideal for constant usage. That's where I'd like it returned to - can I do that?
Once again it's rather late here, there seems to be a huge time difference between us. Thankyou so much for your patience - hopefully we can return to this tomorrow.
Right below the address bar is the usual location of the Bookmarks Toolbar. If it's turned off, you need to turn it back on. If it's turned on but blank, then there's a different fix needed that I'll let you know about if relevant.
Sorry, that's not the screenshot that I wanted to see. I wanted to see if the Bookmarks Toolbar was hidden, as jscher2000 mentioned in the posting above this one.
The only other thing I can think of is, that I wonder if you may have another folder that is named "Bookmarks Toolbar" sitting in the Bookmarks Menu folder somewhere. That can happen when a Bookmarks.HTML file is imported from another Firefox installation.
Hi both
See image below - can you please illustrate where and what I am looking for re. finding what jescher is suggesting I do.
Thankyou
The Bookmarks Toolbar is hidden in that screenshot.
Use View > Toolbars from the Menu Bar at the top of the browser window and click on Bookmarks Toolbar so that is has a check-mark.

I've done that and it is now checked.

Ah three cheers - I have 'Most Visited' back in position! Phew!
Thank you both so much for your patience and help, really grateful and much appreciated. :-)
