I need to remove Thunderbird completely from my laptop and start again as though it was never there.

See the answer here: - first, uninstall the software - then check c:\users\<yourid>\appdata\roaming and delete a folder named thunderbird - also, check c:\users\<yourid>\appdata\local and delete a folder named thunderbird
