I took my computer back to original settings (Windows 10). Downloaded Thunderbird today. Have the settings I need for my verizon email account (using POP3). They are the same as are used on other computers in the house. But it comes back saying "unable to log in at server. Probably wrong configuration, username or password."

Shouldn't you be using either Yahoo or AOL to access your Verizon email account? Last time I checked, Verizon Email was retired. If you migrated your Verizon email account to some other service provider, you should use that provider's server settings instead. See https://www.verizon.com/support/residential/email

That is from 4 years ago when the change took place. We keep our Verizon.net address but it runs through AOL. The settings above work fo my wife on her computer and for me on my phone.

I just ran a name server lookup of the pop.verizon.net server name and it turns out it is an alias of the any-jpop-aol.mail.gm0.yahoodns.net server ran by AOL/Yahoo or whatever entity they identify as. You should give AOL server settings a try, for who knows what could be going on on their end or with your account.

Yahoo/AOL, like the other players, have switched to a modern authentication method (OAuth2). If you are using manual configuration to set up the account in Thunderbird, make sure you've set OAuth2 as the authentication method and not Normal Password. Your account's primary password won't work with Normal Password authentication anymore.
