With Win 10 1803 Home Edge works, Chorme and Firefox shut system down New Dell Inspiron XPS 7573, Dell has remotely run long Hardware Diagnostics, no trouble found. I can search (Bing or Google) fill forms, type input with no trouble. In Chrome or Firefox if I start typing a query or entering a text string, after about 6 characters a fly-out above Notifications Says "Ambient Light Sensor …, and if one or two more characters are typed within a few seconds, the Dell Support Assist App opens, then the screen goes black, and in 15 seconds or so the system shuts down. Pressing Power Button restarts the PC, from Dell logo to login screen, and system comes up exactly where it was when I typed the final character that triggered the shutdown. If I space out typing, leaving a second or two between key strokes, I can avoid the shutdown.

Has anyone else seen this? I am quite sure the system is not overheating, does this with external power connected. Jack

You may have ad/mal-ware. Further information can be found in this article; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-caused-malware?cache=no

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Start your Computer in safe mode with network support. Then start Firefox. Try Secure websites. Is the problem still there?

Thanks for your response. No luck yet

Start Firefox in Safe Mode - System still shuts down with input of about 6 characters

Start PC in safe mode with networking - Both Chrome and Firefox allow typing without issue, but cannot test on web - WiFi networking does not work in safe mode. I have two items in task bar with red x in them. Network and Audio "No output device is installed"

Ran Malware bytes and Windows scanner - nothing found.

I have a Dell Inspiron XPS 7573 2-in-1 laptop. No Ethernet port (I have orderedfound.an adapter from USB, but I suspect the driver may not work in Safe Mode - we shall see)

Success!!!

I ran the entire list of scanners:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Free

SuperAntispyware Portable Scanner Microsoft Safety Scanner Anti-Rootkit Utility - TDSSKiller (see this alternate TDSSKiller download page for more information) AdwCleaner (see this alternate AdwCleaner download page for more information)

Cleaned up 409 tracking cookies (probably not significant) but one scanner found and removed something called ad.360yield.com and another removed Packet Freeware Monitor.

Now both FireFix and Chrome browsers allow data entry without the shutdown I had been experiencing.

Thank you very much, FredMcD

Glad to help. Safe Surfing.

It’s very sad, but many software downloaders/ installers will trick you into installing not only their program, but other programs as well.

You have heard of the fine print in shady contracts, right? Well, some installers you need to look at the itsy bitsy teeny weeny fine print.

You are thinking you are giving the installer permission to install the program you want by using the recommended option. But if you use the Manual Option Instead, you discover all kinds of stuff that you do not even know what it is or what it does.

From now on, everyone needs to Use The Manual Option to put a stop to this.

Note that these programs can also change browser/computer settings.
