Firefox wont load. Task mgr says 104k memory, and nothing else. FF Safe mode is 100k memory, but still nothing

Cant get any response form FF. I click the icon, and it loads in Taskmanager with 104k memory. If I hold down shift to trigger safe mode, it loads 100k memory and hangs there.

Theres no GUI visible.

I thought I'll download FF again, and try and install it, after downloading FF4, the setup program does exactly the same thing! 104k memory!

I've no idea what to do next! :-) Any ideas?

No solution, but have you looked at

If Firefox is crashing you will need to try to get the crash signature, if it is hanging you will need to try to make sure it is closed down properly.

Thanks for the ideas, however it turned out to be an OS issue rather than a FF issue.

My bad :-)

I have same problem:

Did You reinstalled OS ?

no, to my shame, I hadn't tried rebooting! :-)

Just to add to this, it's still happening and isn't fixed. However, I'm not convinced it's an FF problem, I think it's a windows 7 problem.

Just as an aside, if I click a link in an email, it launches FF and everything's fine, the problem is only with the start menu.

weird huh?

What happens then if you start firefox by clicking on the program itself (double click or right click etc) or by using a command line to run firefox.exe.

Did you use a standard install of firefox, or is it a custom install and it is in an odd location ?

I am having the same or very similar problem running on XP SP3. I've downloaded Firefox 4 four different time from two different sites and used the standard install.

When I click on the Firefox icon nothing appears to happen. Checking the process screen firefox.exe is there.

I have tried starting Firefox 4 in Safe Mode and do receive msg about making some of the functions dis enabled permanent, reply to that msg and still does not start.

Using Add/Remove to remove Firefox 4 works and then install 3.6.16 again and Firefox works fine.

Hi Keneb,

From what you say I am assuming you have downloaded firefox 4, had problems and reinstalled firefox 3.6 which you now continue to use.

I am using XP sp3 myself on one machine, that runs firefox 3.6 or firefox 4 without problems.

iirc some users have posted that firefox 4 still looks like firefox 3.6, if you are an XP user you may need to stop the filemenu toolbar displaying before the firefox button of Firefox4 will be seen.

I had recently installed windows update KB2467174 and began getting exactly the problem described here. I uninstalled the update (from Programs and Features), rebooted, and the problem went away.

Here are the extensions I have installed:

- Adblock Plus 1.3.7
- ChatZilla 0.9.86.1
- Flashblock 1.5.14.2
- Java Console 6.0.25

And Plugins:

- Adobe Acrobat 10.0.1.434
- Java Deployment Toolkit 6.0.250.6
- Java Platform SE 6 U25 6.0.250.6
- Shockwave Flash 10.3.181.14
- Shockwave for Director 11.5.9.620
- Silverlight Plug-In 4.0.60310.0

Anyone getting anywhere with this? I'm having the same problem. I've described it under the following mozilla support link: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/811296#answer-194894

I plan to get rid of KB2467174 tonight, but I have KB2467173, 4 AND 5. I guess I'll get rid of all three and then download the stand alone update.

As the patch relates to C++ redistributable, it probably does not affect the vast majority of Firefox users. A quick web search suggests it was a big patch and not without problems.

You could try searching and posting on the Mozillazine forum, they tend to post more technical subjects,

Thanks a lot. I did the uninstalling and reinstalling... WHEN (not if) the problem comes back, I'll hit the mozillazine forums.

Thanks again.
