I have 2 x 10 year old windows xp computers on which Firefox runs perfectly, always has. But it will not run properly on my new Windows 8 computer. The latest problem is with bookmarks. For one thing, they are now on the far right hand side, which I don't like. A more serious problem is that only the bookmarks for the first 8 folders display, all the other folders show no bookmarks, although "Show all bookmarks" shows they are still there.

Problems with bookmarks and history not working properly can be caused by a corrupted places.sqlite database file.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox Profile Folder.

Thank you for your reply. I have spent several hours trying all the suggestions on the link you provided. Nothing worked, so I did a complete reinstall if Firefox after deleting every visible Firefox file, then imported the bookmarks from a file. Guess what, exactly the same problem. By the way, when I deleted the places.sqlite file as suggested, Firefox did not create another one. Any other ideas?

I've finally fixed it, until the next problem anyway. After carefully examining the "Show all bookmarks" I discovered that there were at least 6 sets of bookmarks of various vintages, provenances and states of corruption, with the most corrupt set at the top. These were apparently put there by following the various suggestions for "fixes" on this site. I've finally reconstructed a complete set of bookmarks, after several hours labor. My guess is that the original set became corrupted after one of Firefox's many crashes described by me in another thread.
