every email has an attachment , why ?
Every email in the inbox has an attachment , even if was sent as a simple message without any attachments. This attachment will be a script or italicized version of the normal message. Nothing is added to the message , the message is simply repeated in an attachment. How can I change this so the attachments are no longer created ? I am using ThunderBird 24.4.0 , Vipre internet security, POP3 type email server Sent messages do not have attachments added.

Many email programs (Thunderbird included, send a HTML and TEXT version of Html Mail. This is something of a hangover but not entirely obsolete. There are still people out there using email programs that do not understand HTML (often corporate/ Government Department systems)
I originally thought your anti virus may have either been adding an attachment (Scanned by XXXXX everything fine) or modifying the body of the email such that the text version was appearing as an attachment.
As that was apparently wrong I will move on to other causes.

what happens if you disable email scanning?
Hi Matt,
I think your referring to scanning by Vipre anti-virus, right ?
I'll try that and respond in about 10Hrs , computer with problem is in a different location. CRM
Hi Matt, Turning Vipre off did not change anything. Computer will still show a attachment at the bottom of the email text , even on simiple email with no attachments. This "created" attachment is a copy of the email text. I also tried running ThundferBird in "safe mode" to turn off all add ons. Problem remains the same.
One peculiar thing about this , the attachment symbol , a paper
clip , is only shown on emails with actual attachments . The "created" attachments are only listed at the bottom of the email text.

Thanks Matt that solved the problem. From the view menu under message body , none of the three choices were checked. Selected original HTML and that cured the problem !
