I downloaded vuze and screwed with my Omni.ja files. Can I restore them or do I have to reinstall FF?

So, unbeknownst to me, Vuze has put malware in their installer. (#neveragain) I think I've gotten rid of most of it but FF is redirecting to imp.vuzemc.com. Fuck that. I can see the word "Vuze" in the omni.ja files in firefox. How do I restore them? Is there a place to download the originals?

Suggest AdwCleaner, info as per above as do not want to loose anything important.

uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files(x86) Then restart system. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles

Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 57.0.1 with a Full Version Installer https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/

Hi audiomatt, are you sure you are free of problem extensions? You can check on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Command+Shift+a (Windows: Ctrl+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions. Then cast a critical eye over the list on the right side. Any system extensions that Firefox installs on its own are hidden from this page, so everything listed here is your choice (and your responsibility) to manage. Anything suspicious? If in doubt, disable.

You might also check the proxy setting:

  • Mac: "3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences
  • Windows: "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options
  • Linux: "3-bar" menu button (or Edit menu) > Preferences
  • Any system: type or paste about:preferences into the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it

In the search box at the top of the page on the right side, type proxy and Firefox should filter to the "Settings" button, which you can click.

The default of "Use system proxy settings" should piggyback on the same settings used by Safari. "Auto-detect" can lead to a flaky connection. You may want to try "No proxy".

How much context can you see? When I search for Vuze in the source code there seem to be several random occurrence of that four letter string:

So perhaps you're getting a false positive.

If you want to replace that file, I do think you need to reinstall. I think as long as you have a backup of your profile, you can take the risk of trashing Firefox.app and reinstalling from the .dmg download.

Keep in mind that omni.ja files are ZIP archives and you can't edit such a file. You will have to reinstall Firefox if you really edited such an archive file and move the current Firefox version to the Trash.
