Working addon to show parent folders of bookmarks
I came looking for info / status on addons like Show Parent Folder or Go Parent Folder, when I saw the recent post on this forum, with slow workaround: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1161879
Q: Do any other addons exist, updated for Fx 57, that instantly show the parent folder of bookmarks in a bookmarks manager search results?
The workaround in forum question 1161879 is OK for 1 bookmark, once in a while. I need this on a regular basis. Anyone that's collected bookmarks for a couple of decades, has similar-topic bookmarks scattered in different folders (not duplicates).
Imagine a file manager with search function that finds file names, but doesn't show where they're located. :D Fairly regularly, similar-topic bookmarks need to be located and moved to one folder.
For everyone "bugged" by lack of this feature, the request / bug on bugzilla won't help immediately (it was filed 15 yrs ago!). It's gotten some recent attention. This and similar bugs probably need more votes (need a bugzilla acct) vs. more comments, at this point. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=196509 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=469421
Now that addons providing this feature have gone away, maybe if lots of users voted for it to be fixed, developers would make a change.
On a much larger scale than one bookmarks feature, if Firefox was losing users to Chrome before, what does Mozilla think will happen when many addons & plugins suddenly go away?

If you can find these bookmarks via a search in the Bookmarks Manager (Library) then you should be able to do a cut & paste to move them to one folder if that is the main use of such a feature.
Note that the Library has an Undo item located under the Organize button to undo changes made to bookmarks.
For anyone interested - on bugzilla https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=196509 - "Search for bookmark should show parent folder," (~ 15 yrs old), Moz dev, Marco Bonardo, said there's no resources to do it (assume meant Mozilla devs' time).
He also said, "If the community wants to do it, someone should just come out with a solid plan and time to do it." I guess ? conceding - after 15 yrs, if any talented users can write the code, they'd definitely consider adding it.
So, calling all coders: if you (or a team) can write code for what shouldn't be too difficult - show the parent folder path for search results, you'll get international, prestigious recognition (Marco didn't think it would be "hard").
I'd think one place to start is look at Show Parent Folder addon (now removed from AMO), as Alice references bug 196509 in Chrome/overlayx.x.js .
Probably several ways to do it, but bookmark folder paths are obviously already in places.sqlite. One way would be add (optional?) column in bookmarks search results, then "grab" the path from places.sqlite for each result bookmark.
You're "beating a dead horse" by bringing up 15 yo Bugs for features that Mozilla had no interest in developing as a standard feature in Firefox.
As far that past is concerned, there was an extension to show Parent Folders for bookmarks in the past, but the developer (White Alice0775) quit developing add-ons for Firefox awhile ago and removed almost all his add-ons from AMO. There are only two elderly add-ons still listed at AMO from that developer. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/show-parent-folder/?src=userprofile
If you think adding that feature to Firefox "for what shouldn't be too difficult " - have a go at it yourself or hire a programmer to do it for you. That is how extensions get created. And as far as a built-in feature goes, Mozilla has a full plate already so don't expect Mozilla to add a feature such as that considering they "took a pass on it" 15 years ago.
Aw, it took Mozilla many yrs to fix the bug, if visited links turned color, sites could guess your browsing history.
I'm aware of all you said. I'm not sure you got the context of my last post. A lot (LOT) of people are more interested in this than ever, since the addons to do it are gone.
If it wasn't clear enough that I don't have the experience to do it myself by asking if anyone is interested in working on it, let me re-clarify that. :) And Alice White was the one that said his Show Parent Folder "was small and simple code." Marco, a Moz dev, is the one that said, "Nobody ever said it's hard" [adding this feature].
If it's relatively easy, and this many people have voted for several nearly identical bugs, there should be some average coders willing to do it. Ask and ye shall receive.
Ed, you've been around a while - how about you or someone you know?? ;-) Maybe you could update Show Parent Folder for web extensions?
I'm trying to beat the bushes for people w/ the know how to write a patch - or addon, if they prefer. A lot of people seemed to get the idea that Mozilla wouldn't approve the feature. Apparently, that's not it. They often haven't added in-demand features, as long as someone would write an addon, for free.
On the other hand, they've fixed far less important features very quickly.
Just to say: Fully agree with Joebt. It's to bad, that we are not developers :-)
