I am using Thunderbird 78.5, Windows 10, AVG virus protection (free version) and hughes.net for mail. A continuing problem sending e-mail. I can receive but not sent. I have been getting this problem on and off for months. Goes away then comes back (seems during an update).

I have tried all the fixes such as disabiling AVG anti-virus, changing password, checking outgoing server, changing security tls verision enable to true and min value to 1, but nothing works. It has to be thunderbird because I can send messages using windows MAIL and the hughes.net e-mail interface.

The error I receive on thunderbird reads: log in to server failed. Failed due to unexpected error 80004005. No description available. This message could not be sent using outgoing server SMTP.hughes.net for an unknown reason. Please verify outgoing server (SMTP) setting.

I have verified server settings and they are correct.

Please help as I like thunderbird and don't want to ditch it for something else. Thank you

Restarted in thunderbird safe mode. It worked. Restarted in normal mode, it worked. As I have stated before problem comes and goes. It usually fixes itself sometimes right away, sometimes in a day or two.

I will shut off updates and see if that solves it for good.

Thanks alot

Try to start Windows in safe mode with networking enabled.

Still in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in safe mode. Does the problem go away?

Bad idea. Turning off updates will

  • leave you vulnerable,
  • and it won't solve the problem.

Windows safe mode turns off anti-virus software which is almost certainly the culprit. In other words, your problem will return.

These are some generic suggestions to avoid problems with anti-virus software.

Create an exception in your anti-virus software for the Thunderbird profile folder, so that the anti-virus real-time scanner will not scan it. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Thunderbird

Don't let your anti-virus software scan incoming and outgoing messages.

Don't let your anti-virus software scan attachments.

Don't let your anti-virus software intercept your secure connection to the server.

Remove any add-ons your anti-virus software may have installed in Thunderbird.

Keep it working. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keep_it_working_-_Thunderbird

And last but not least, backup your Thunderbird profile on a regular basis. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_backing-up-a-profile
