the new animation while dragging a tab to reposition it is horrible. yes it looks "pretty" but its not as functional as it was previously. let me guess ff copied another chrome feature? i dont use chrome but i would put money on it being a chrome thing. when i have a bunch of tabs open and drag a tab i have a hard time moving the tab X amount of spots because i lose perspective of where the tab started. because of this i end up dragging it around a couple times and clicking different tabs. gets very annoying. searched google and couldnt find anything but im hoping that there an about:config setting that i can set to get the old behavior back with the arrows.

thanks

Yes, it is another Chrome rip.

I too find this change to severely effect my efficiency at using the browser.

While I can manage with the new animation (browser.tabs.animate does not do anything to this drag animation), the one terrible effect of this change is that the browser centers itself to where you moved the tab. This is atrocious. I cannot find a config option for this nor any information when googling either.

Yet another change we are forced to deal with as the imbeciles shout and whine for more a more Chrome-like experience.

I think it is time to install PaleMoon or Waterfox; I am sick of having to hunt for methods to revert changes Mozilla implements every release.

  • bug 783282 - When dragging a tab within the tab strip, move it directly instead of displaying a drop indicator

To a non-developer, what is this link supposed to provide?

I understand the point of a 'bug' report, but is there something there we are able to grab and apply to the source of Firefox and compile it ourselves without the change? Can we dispute the change?

I myself commented about the change here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=649671

Still, this does not cover the centering of the tab bar when dropping the dragged tab. Do I have to create another topic about this?

am i missing something? that bug is from 2012-08-16 and marked as 'RESOLVED FIXED' and they are talking about fixing the bug for ff 17 release.

I Found a working solution: Install the Tab Utilities extension for Firefox and make sure extensions.tabutils.disableTabMoveAnimation is set to true. The animation should now be gone and the lovely arrow back!

thanks for the reply. i hate having to use 3rd party extensions because mozilla decided to remove/ruin a feature. the tab animation is annoying because its hard to visualize where you are moving the tab especially when you have a lot of tabs open so i'm considering trying it.

Yeah, I installed that addon sometime in the past to try and do something I forgot.

Installed it now and set the option; great! Might be a tiny bit different from how Mozilla did it, but I'm pretty sure that's because I'm using a different theme now.

Still; I don't like the other features the addon has, and can't really find a way to disable -all- of them easily (without disabling things I have set already with Menu Editor). I've commented on the Mozillazine forum thread asking if there's a way we can just use the config option by itself; waiting for a response.

When I get one, I'll post it here if it's beneficial.

why can't the firefox team take into consideration that every time they "borrow" one of these "features" from Chrome that they are going to break something else in the browser for a lot of users, usually requiring ANOTHER work around and installing ANOTHER extension just to restore basic functionality to what USED to be a good, functional browser.

There is nothing I can add here. A truly idiotic decision. Having to install yet another add-on to fix problems which shouldn't exist in the first place is beyond pathetic. There SHOULD be a disable option within about:config

They seem hellbent on appealing to the child-minded who simply cannot exist without an "experience". And in nearly every case, these lame and ludicrous enhancements are robbing efficiency.

FIX THIS!!!!!

Unfortunately, I installed Tab Utilities a while back to resolve this but it conflicts with Tab Mix Plus (big warning message from T.U. upon restart after installation) so I disabled it. I have a few too many setting configurations invested in TMP to give it up for one small change. I also have Menu Editor installed and don't want to mess around with that either.

Plus, we all know there is a solution and it should not involve having to install yet another add-on.

What also seems to work is not to drag the tab along the tab bar, but to move it down in the browser window (i.e. detach it) and move it from there to the wanted position on the tab bar or on the tab bar scroll buttons to make the tab bar scroll.

Cor-el, that is actually when I have the most problems.

First I should explain that I have the bookmarks bar between the tabs bar (which is just above the browser window) and the navigation toolbar (at the top just below the browser's title bar).

So for dragging to bookmark I have two options -- drag the tab down to the window, or drag it along the bookmarks toolbar. For the latter, I get to watch the white positioner arrow all the way through the bookmark icons until I place the bookmark in a folder. It seemed to work okay, but requires more attention to keep it positioned while dragging than should be required. I don't know about other people but I do a lot of multitasking so it bothers me knowing this was not like this before.

If you are refering to rearranging tabs, it works okay, but again requires too much precision. I'd much rather just have it with the arrow that existed before an position i how I'd like. Previously, it seemed like the user controlled the speed of repositioning by how fast or slow they dragged. Now, the tabs are shooting around at a speed that can't be controlled, in response to the user initiating the movement by grabbing and slightly moving the tab.

I don't have the tab bar on top, so this is easy for me to do (forgot about this).

Current Firefox versions only show the "Tabs on Top" menu entry in the "View > Toolbars" and "Firefox > Options" menu and in toolbar context menus if the tabs aren't in the default position on top.

If the tabs are on top and the menu entry isn't available and you want to move the tabs below the navigation toolbar then you need to toggle the browser.tabs.onTop pref to false on the about:config page.
A Firefox restart is necessary to update the menu entry to either show or remove it.

My tabs are not on top. When I said "browser window", I meant where the page appears.

So top to bottom: title bar, navigation bar, bookmarks toolbar, tab bar, browser window (the web page).

I have suppressed the menu bar and the add-on bar is at the bottom of the window.

I had started my own thread (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/952278?fpa=1) about this over a month ago but was not able to upload screen shots. Maybe I'll try again later today.
