Hello Experts: Happy New year! I've been using Firefox forever. for the first time, it just started crashing a couple of weeks ago. It opens, works for about 10-30 seconds, and then crashes. I have done a refresh as well as multiple reinstalls, but the crashes continue. it crashes even in safe mode.

Using Win 7 professional on a Lenovo laptop (2 years old) with Intel Core i7 and 16 GB RAM and 460GB SSD.

here is the latest crash ID: Crash ID: bp-e8501eae-8051-4a0c-a223-326670190107

Any help or guidance you can provide is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi adavenj, sorry to hear about the crashes and thank you for the report. This one seems to be a problem between Firefox and the Windows file

msmpeg2vdec.dll

Is your Firefox loading a video file when the crash occurs?

Hi jscher2000: Thank you so much for your response. I'm kind of a Tech Moron (although i used to be at the cutting edge of tech 30 odd years ago!). How do i find out if Firefox is loading that file?

I'm attaching an image that shows all instances of that file on my computer, if that helps.

Hi adavenj, I think we can assume from your crash report that Firefox is triggering a chain of events that leads to a problem with that DLL. Since it references MPEG, it most likely is needed for some audio or video media used in a page you're loading. At least, that would be logical.

From your screenshot, it appears the current files (in the folders with short names, SysWOW64 is 32-bit and System32 is 64-bit) are from 2015, so I don't imagine the file is too new; possibly there is a newer version that would come through Windows updates. To avoid infecting your computer, don't download them from any third party sites.

Thank you, my friend! The windows is completely updated. I just rechecked. Not sure what i can do. Should i delete those DLL files? Would that help?

You can check if there is an update for your graphics display driver and check for hardware acceleration related issues.

Thank you again, jscher2000. Unfortunately , none of the suggested ideas worked. The computer has an intel graphics card and i updated it. i also followed all the instructions in those two links. It still didn't work.

If there are any other options, please let me know. Meanwhile, I'm on the east coast and going to call it a night. Will try to fix this again tomorrow.

Many thanks for you help! I am always impressed by the Firefox community. I sincerely appreciate any ideas and help!
