As far as I'm aware, Pop mail accounts do not have the ability to mark anything on the server, they just download or delete if setting is set. They can only mark emails in the Pop mail account.

I suspect there is a setting on the server accessed via webmail that is setting this. What is the server eg: gmail?

This sounds like: if the POP server storing the emails on server deems that if the email has been downloaded, then it has been read. There is no way of controlling this via Thunderbird because it cannot mark/move etc anything on the server. So, it must have something to do with the Pop protocol and there's no method in the POP protocol that allows the client to control the status of messages left on the server.

What is the server eg: gmail? No this is not gmail, this is server from Poland.

Administrator says that this is problem with TB not with server but i see that i have discuss this problem with him. I understant that pop3 cant mark mails on server as read or unread? and there is no option in TB to do this with pop3?

Administrator says that this is problem with TB not with server. No. It is how POP protocol works.

I'm not using gmail either and my pop also marks as read on server. That's how POP protocol works. It is a one way protocol. The server assumes you have read them because you downloaded them. So the server marks them as read.

Pop was designed to access the only the Inbox on server, download mail and then delete mail off server. It was expected that you stored your emails on your computer and you took the necessary precautions to backup your email. However, there are options to keep a copy on the server, but you have no control over them via Pop.

IMAP allows remote access to subscribed folders on server. This method is useful if accessing the server from different computers.

Synchronising subscribed folders will download a copy to your computer which means you can read emails in TB 'Offline' mode. You can also make a copy of email and store it in Local Folders or externally.

As you are already usiing IMAP, it would make sense for you to continue using that method on other computers.
