This happens all the time on my Vista computer. It's especially irritating when some programs update and restart my computer automatically. Thx for any help with this odd problem.

One typical method is to copy your Firefox shortcut to the Startup folder for your Windows account.

I found an article for Windows 7, and I suspect XP is very similar (minor start menu differences): http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wi.../run-a-program-automatically-when-windows-starts

Is the program itself gone, or just the shortcut?

The program would be in this folder; C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
