This has been asked several times and unfortunately none of the old about:config methods work, at least not in the newest update (January 2016 - 44.0). The automatic MP3 player starts playing the file I want to download when I left click on a link.

Also, I notice a site I visit that uses JWPlayer doesn't work properly. I click on the preview and silence, even though the player is on screen. I've refreshed Firefox but nothing. Both Edge and Opera play fine, but Firefox is my preference as it's easier to use than the other two.

The site, one of many, is www.digitalmusicpool.com. Previews are free even if not a member.

Thanks

On the first point, you are trying to use about:config to disable Firefox from natively playing MP3 media. What settings are you using?

On the second point, if you do not disable Firefox from playing the media:

  • A bar opens at the bottom of the page showing a volume control,
  • The tab has the audio playing/muted icon, and
  • The Windows volume mixer shows whether Firefox is individually muted or not (example screen shot attached).

Obviously if you disable Firefox from playing the media in about:config, something different may happen, or nothing, but in order to replicate your settings, please tell us what you changed.

If you left click a link then Firefox will perform the default action based on the content-type that the server sends. For mp3 file this is playing the file in a tab if the type is audio/mp3 and not a generic type. You would have to right-click such a link and use "Save Link As" or possible hold the Alt key and left-click in case you have enabled this feature and have set browser.altClickSave to true about:config page.
