Why did the "hotfix" disable most addons in FF 56.0.2 when I have all updates for 56.0.2 turned off.

I DO NOT want to "Upgrade" FF because the non-functional "Web Extensions" will not perform the same "Addons" functions, which I have used for years, Most "Web Extensions" are now useless.

I realize that later versions of FF "provides more security" - However, the "Web Extensions" are unusable as they now have very little, if any, to even do simple things like remembering the last directory used, that FF 56.0.2 addons perform flawlessly.

So, back to my original question, when will my addons be re-enabled for FF 56.0.2?

They should not have been effected by this "hotfix" when my browser is set to "Never check for updates (not recommended)".

We are aware of an issue on May 3 that disabled add-ons. The issue has been fixed in the latest version of Firefox. To upgrade to the latest version with the fix, visit [https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/new/].

If you are unable to update to the latest version, add-ons with fixes are available for older versions of Firefox. See this article [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/add-ons-disabled-or-fail-to-install-...] for more information.

This was not caused by an update. Sort of the opposite. A critical certificate used in verifying add-on signatures expired, so you need a hotfix to install, enable, or update most add-ons. More info in this article:

jscher2000,

The information at "https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/add-ons-disabled-or-fail-to-install-firefox", does not seem to apply to FF 56.0.2...

The "hotfix" does seem to be the issue - the timing is precisely the same as the problem with "Why did the "hotfix" disable most addons in FF 56.0.2 when I have all updates for 56.0.2 turned off. "

If you claim that my issues are not related to the FF "hotfix", the info that you referred me to, DOES not let me download the addons from each developer - FF 56.0.2 claims that each download is "Corrupt" and will not install.

Mozilla has wiped out multiple addons, including all security software (including McAfee) - and thus destroyed any "safe" browsing via FF 56.0.2.

Is this Mozilla's way to force us to update FF to a version that has many non-useful "Web-Extentions" - So called Increased "Safety" vs. usability of the browser?

Please direct me to an article that addresses this issue for FF 56.0.2, NOT the current version. (Updating FF seems to have all of the same problems with addons as 56.0.2.

I need a direct fix for FF 56.0.2. I DO NOT WANT TO LOSE MY FUNCTIONAL ADDONS, BUT MOZILLA SEEMS TO HAVE TAKEN THOSE ADDONS AWAY FROM ME ALREADY, ANYWAY.

PLEASE RESTORE THEM.

Hi Doug, Firefox 56 is no longer supported and there is no article I'm aware of for non-current versions. If you cannot install the new certificate using the hotfix described in the article, you can do it manually. It's not a supported solution, but it worked in my test. Additional Info: From Mozilla Blog:

Updates – Last Updated: 19:28 EDT May 8 2019

We’ve released Firefox 66.0.5 for Desktop and Android, and Firefox ESR 60.6.3, which include the permanent fix for re-enabling add-ons that were disabled starting on May 3rd. The initial, temporary fix that was deployed May 4th through the Studies system is replaced by these updates, and we recommend updating as soon as possible. Users who enabled Studies to receive the temporary fix, and have updated to the permanent fix, can now disable Studies if they desire.

For users who cannot update to the latest version of Firefox or Firefox ESR, we plan to distribute an update that automatically applies the fix to versions 52 through 60. This fix will also be available as a user-installable extension. For anyone still experiencing issues in versions 61 through 65, we plan to distribute a fix through a user-installable extension. These extensions will not require users to enable Studies, and we’ll provide an update when they are available.

"Updates – Last Updated: 11:51 EDT May 8 2019

Firefox 66.0.5 has been released, and we recommend that people update to that version if they continue to experience problems with extensions being disabled. You’ll get an update notification within 24 hours, or you can initiate an update manually.
An update to ESR 60.6.3 is also available as of May 8th. We’re continuing to work on a fix for older versions of Firefox, and will update this post and on social media as we have more information."

Please refer to my ORIGINAL QUESTION ABOVE.

All combined versions since FF v56.0.2 HAVE trashed 85%+ of my "Addons" with the nearly useless "WEB EXTENSIONS."

Additionally, I will NOT "DOWNGRADE" to v66+. I have been following the forums ever since v57+. The user community has been complaining about multiple malfunctions from the time Mozilla tried forcing us to "DOWNGRADE". (eg loss of "Bookmarks", etc.)

Currently, the unanswered questions regarding 66+, indicates that it is not even close to stable - so quit trying to force us to use it.

When and if it becomes stable, as well as having "Extensions" perform as the counterpart "Addons" were performing, I might consider it - IF MY MORE RECENT QUESTION ("Can I install v66+ & keep my installed v56.0.2 (64-bit) on my PC at the same time?" at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1258705 , SPECIFICALLY FULLY FUNCTIONAL) IS EVER ANSWERED WITH A LINK TO AN ACCURATE ARTICLE.

Does not this help or answer your question?:

The above will fix the Extensions that were 'locked-up' due to a Certificate Expiration boo-boo for versions 52-60. This past weekend's Bug-a-Boo affected numerous Web Extensions, including Themes and Language Packs.

If you leave the 'broken' extension alone, they'll come back with your preferences still intact when the older FF versions 'fix' are released.

Thank You Pj,

I look forward to seeing if that fix will restore my addons to v56.0.2.

If there is an article that answers my more recent question, "Can I install v66+ & keep my installed v56.0.2 (64-bit) on my PC at the same time?" at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1258705 , I would appreciate some guidance to find it.

Thanks

You can have as many versions of Firefox as you want. However, each must have its own profile.

Note: Some versions store data differently than other versions. You can use sync to share data between profiles.

History, bookmarks, and password data can be shared with different versions of the browser. But nothing else. But everything can be shared with profiles accessed by the same Firefox version.

Forgot to add, when installing another browser version, switch to Manual and place that browser in its own folder in the computers Programs Folder.

Thank You Pj,

I'll give that approach a try WHEN Mozilla finally releases a stable version - fixing all of the current problems.

Until then, there doesn't seem to be much of a point to trying 2 versions. WHEN there is a stable version, I will give it a try, while also keeping FF v 56.0.2.

Hi Doug, did you already apply the hotfix that is currently in testing, or another workaround?

I've summarized the status (as of yesterday) here: https://www.jeffersonscher.com/ffu/armagadd-on_2_0.html

Thank You Josh,

The addon "Disabled Add-on Fix for Firefox 47 - 56" referenced from the above link that you provided, seems to work for ALMOST ALL Disabled addons.

I can live with this!

Thanks Again.
