I am running Firefox ESR version 52.6.0 on Windows XP. My bank has just advised me that as of March 10, 2018 it will no longer support browsers using TLS1.1 encryption, only those using TLS1.2. Will I be able to continue to use Firefox with the bank?

Firefox has supported TLS 1.2 by default since Firefox 27.0 Release (Feb 4, 2014) as per Bug#861266. It can support TLS 1.3 but still not enabled by default.

There are TLS settings prefs on the about:config page that specify the minimum and maximum TLS version.

  • security.tls.version.min = 1
  • security.tls.version.max = 3

1 means TLS 1.0 2 means TLS 1.1 3 means TLS 1.2 (default) 4 means TLS 1.3

Firefox supports 256-bit encryption if the site provides such. https://www.fortify.net/sslcheck.html

Note since you are using the old EOL WinXP the last Firefox Release to still run on WinXP/Vista will be Firefox 52.9.0esr out on June 25. Apart from any minor Fx 52.9.x esr updates for security and allowed stability fixes.

Windows 7 or later or a Linux (with a light desktop manager like Xfce if on old system) will be your only way to use newer web browser including current Firefox Releases.
