firefox 12.0 on the google search page i had two buttons: safesearch on/off button options button (gear wheel) the last button still appears on the screen, but is blank now: the gearwheel doesn't appear. When ipush it results are inconsistent: in some screens (search results) i get 4 options to choose from, in other screens nothin happens at all.

I really don't like this, because FF seems to have become unstable on my machine.

As a fix i complete reinstalled FF, no change, problem persisted.

IE doesnt have this problem

hi madperson, thanks for the quick reply. I indeed cleaned up all cookies and cache, but in fact more websites as webmail appeared wierd as well. To cut things short i decided to reinstall an older version, which solved the problem. This is not really a firefox preferred solution, but alas.

It sounds more that those buttons were added by an extension.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.
