Seriously, what is the point in Firefox 29 in removing from Sync the ability to copy all the settings on Device A to Device B?

Sync used to work, albeit clunkily before Firefox 29. Now it does nothing at all in Firefox 29. What is the point? Bring back Sync functionality so we can copy all the tabs, bookmarks, passwords, and history from Device A to Device B.

You are wrong, the-edmeister. Sure, I still have a Sync account in Firefox 29 and I can log into that Sync account on Device A and Device B and there is a thing you can click called "Sync" and you can even click something called "Sync Now" but guess what? When I click on "Sync Now" on Device B:

  • It doesn't update my Tabs from Device A
  • It doesn't update my Bookmarks from Device A
  • It doesn't update my Passwords from Device A
  • It doesn't update my History from Device A

In other words, it doe NOT Sync. So, NO, the new Firefox has removed all functionality from Sync.

Sync itself is exactly the same in 29, the only difference is the way you log into it.

Have you correctly updated all your devices to the new sync? Are they all running 29.0.1? Have you made sure they are all logged in correctly?

Tyler - Yes I have, yes they are, and yes they are.

No, Sync is very different in Firefox 29. Before, you could pair a device and specify that you want copy all the tabs, history, bookmarks, and passwords on Device A to Device B and it would do it. It worked. Now in Firefox 29 you upgrade, you log in, you ask it to Sync and nothing happens. It does not work.

There are 3 about: data pages for Sync. Type each of these in separate tabs, and hit Enter.
about:sync-log
about:sync-progress
about:sync-tabs

Take a look at what is or isn't happening with Sync.

the-edmeister. you are missing my point. Before Firefox 29 I could tell my devices to copy all tabs, bookmarks, passwords, and history from Device A to Device B. THAT is what Sync used to be. Firefox 29 took away that functionality. I used to be able to flawlessly keep two other devices synced up with my main device. Now we have no control over our Sync accounts and it does nothing to Sync devices after you get the "Setup complete" graphic.

So after years of flawless Sync functionality, now all Sync does is nothing.

Mozilla took away functionality from their product. That is the issue I would like someone to address: bring back to Sync the ability to tell my devices to copy all tabs, bookmarks, passwords, and history from Device A to Device B.

profggiles: have you considered that you might be the only person experiencing this problem? Please be kind to the folks who are spending their time to help users like you, rather than assuming that there's some kind of malice involved.

Gateway Timeout is a server-side or network issue. If you email me your error log, and let me know what your Firefox Account email address is, I'll take a look and see what we can find.

Thanks!

I've checked with our Ops team and there was a recent spike in "Gateway Timeout" errors due to some server migration work. This should be resolved now, if you continue to see these errors please reach out with the information that rnewman outlined above.

Ray, If this issue with Sync continues, please take advantage of rnewman offer of looking into this issue personally.
