Sterted computer, started thunderbird (been using it for years). All my email accounts and messages have disappeared! What do I do?

I am using the latest release of Thunderbird (24.6.0) and have it installed on a Windows 7 machine. I just started my computer and logged in. Then I started Thunderbird (the computer, a Sony VAIO laptop) had been shut down for about 9 hours.

When Thunderbird started it asked me to set up an email account. The four accounts that I already had were gone. No account details. No message search possible. My address book was intact and my passwords are all still stored. What happened?
