Any email folder that isn't downloaded by thunderbird causes the entire program to lag extremely bad. I can't read emails, access emails or do anything till downloading is done. Is there anything I can do to help the program perform better?

Since there hasn't been anyone who encountered this problem & found a solution. Would there be anyone that knows how to contact Thunderbird support?

This is Thunderbird Support. You have contacted them. I am busy earning a living, as are most of the other volunteers. The result is questions that actually contain information get priority. We simply do not have time to play twenty questions to learn about your system and what is actually happening most of the time.

If your using McAfee or AVG that is probably your issue. Otherwise: To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try one of the following:

  • Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
  • Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.

I think the issue here is that my trash bin is to big but I deleted so much like over 20K and it still happens. Anything being moved to trash takes forever to get done. I get the error Script: chrome://messenger/content/folderPane.js

right click the folder, select compact.

I had tried that and tried again but it still doesn't make a difference. The more emails I Send to trash the longer it takes to get sent to it. I think I had even deleted the history of the trash from the Thunderbird profile but that didn't solve it either.

I appreciate your help in trying to solve this.

right click the trash folder and pick properties. What is folder size?

My folder has 36279 emails and 1.8 GB in space. I like to have emails even in trash going back 2 years, so sadly those are only emails since Oct 2013.

Lately sometimes deleting emails doesn't cause as much of a lag anymore. Not sure if some Thunderbird updates have helped or what.

I agree with Matt, we need to know what happens in windows safe mode. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1029208#answer-652595

If the problem is not antivirus, then I doubt your problem is the trash folder. However, I've seen weird issues related to size of Trash. And I'm also compelled to ask, why are you storing these "no longer wanted" messages in Trash instead of Archives?

Any email folder that isn't downloaded by thunderbird causes the entire program to lag extremely bad.

Also, what what exactly do you mean by "Any email folder that isn't downloaded by thunderbird causes the entire program to lag"? D

Do you mean the problem only happens on folders that are not Inboxes? Are these gmail accounts?

I'll try the safe mode on Safari if the issue comes up again but I think latest build resolved the bad lag on this.

I have my mail boxes set to download for offline use. I think when I was trying to solve the issues I deleted some of the mail boxes/folder and it caused a lag as it re-downloaded everything. Been a long time now so I can't remember for sure.

> I think latest build resolved the bad lag on this.

What build exactly - version and date?

Version 31.6.0.

Thanks for that info.

I do not see anything in the fix list for 31.6.0 that would impact performance [1]. So something happened in your environment, on the server or on the PC, that impacted the behavior. Sometimes the mere act of installing a new version of Thunderbird has some impact. Put another way, I bet if you went back to 31.5.0 that you would NOT see the problem.
