thunderbird crashes start ujp
Thunderbird updated itself to 31.3.0 and first time out it crashes within about five seconds. Hold down Shift to go safe-mode, same crash. If I am quick enough I can get to Help Restart with add-ons disabled. Then it doesn't crash from there. I don't have any add-ons. I don't have any extensions. Appearance is default. There is a bunch of plug-ins, but they are all set to Never Activate. No idea why they are there or set to Never Activate.

Found the suggestion to edit the prefs.js file, adding: user_pref("gfx.direct2d.disabled", true);
Same crash with this 'fix'.
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/mozilla-crash-reporter#w_viewing-reports-outside-of-thunderbird see the article, what are a couple of the recent crash ids?
Command result is 'can't find c:\Documents\'. C:\Documents and Settings\xxxxx\Application Data\Thunderbird\Crash Reports last file is InstallTime20141127140543
if typing the command %appdata% results in an error you have a great deal more wrong that just Thunderbird.
Application Data\Thunderbird\Crash Reports\submitted is where the reports we can access are located.
I find the command %APPDATA%\Thunderbird\Crash Reports\submitted\ fails because there is no folder named 'submitted'. Thunderbird didn't make one. %APPDATA%\Thunderbird\Crash Reports\ opens the 'Crash Reports' folder. So there is not a Windows problem. Thunderbird has never shown a crash report to me. So there being no 'submitted' folder makes sense. This update is the first time Thunderbird has ever done anything wrong. The issue appeared the first time the updated Thunderbird ran.
So what your saying is Thunderbird crashes and no crash report is created, is a windows one created?
Just download and reinstall the program and see if that helps, no uninstall, just install it.
Correct, start Thunderbird, five seconds later, poof gone. No crash report box pops up. Download and re-install same crash.
what I do not understand is the different action from a restart with add-ons disabled from the help menu and the safe mode holding shift. They should have exactly the same result.
Can you please confirm I am not off with the pixies and that you do indeed get different results from the two different safe mode restarts.
Please also try running in windows safe mode with networking. Instructions for Windows XP
After the re-install, I cannot repeat the crashes that happened with the Shift key held. That feature now works and the result is the same as from the Help menu.
Windows Safe Mode With Networking appears to eliminate the crash.
That would indicate o a high degree of probability that the issue is your anti virus program.
Turned off all shields in Avast and the same crash occurs. Remember this crash only started with the latest update of Thunderbird and was not present previously.
Matt, After many many times of not catching this crash, the detector worked:

Matt, You've had the crash data quite a while. About one time in 20 doesn't crash. I've not gotten another crash data from it. When can we expect the fix?

Crash reports are submitted to Mozilla, providing the crash id allows examination of the full crash report. including the technical information.
I tried searching on the comment you inserted, but my search Fu was not up to scratch. So please some crash id's?
Crash ID: bp-2b11dc51-9724-4ecf-ac25-fce6b2141221
This crash has been around a long time, and has only ever been reported by people using Windows XP and 6 core phenom Processors. Given XP is EOL I do not see any work ever being done to actually fix the bug.
However if you go to the Config Editor and set layers.acceleration.disabled=true I think you will get a stable Thunderbird.
