I have been using Thunderbird to access 2 gmail accounts for years but now, I have been unable to receive or send anything on either of the accounts since 3/13/15. I did not receive any error messages except for the message when it fails to send. On the status bar at the bottom it goes from "looking up" to "connecting" but it never connects and I get no error message. My computer is a macbook pro running mavericks. Yes I can sign on to all my gmail accounts via web and android phone. I tried several solutions but no fix up to this point. Here is a list.

1-double checked server settings. changed from pop.googlemail.com to pop.gmail.com...did not work...no errors popped up during operation. 2-double checked firewall settings...no work 3-turned off firewall...no work 4-backed up profile and did a fresh install, put my profile back in, did not work...no errors popped up 5-backed up profile and did a fresh install of 31.0 but instead of using my old profile I tried the wizzard. During the auto configure I had an error of "user name or password invalid"...I did enter the correct information...then I tried to manually configure, hit re-test, got "thunderbrid failed to find the settings for your email account" and also "user name or password invalid" 6-put my original profile back in and deleted all saved passwords, restarted thunderbird, and it did not ask for a new password. I clicked the get new messages button and I did not get a request for a new password.

I am attaching a screenshot of error console

Hi Rodigr,

Have you tried connecting over IMAP instead of POP3?

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/thunderbird-and-gmail

After this you could try creating an IMAP log https://wiki.mozilla.org/MailNews:Logging#Mac_OS_X

To see what you get...

Hi spnz,

Thank you for the reply. I do not know what happened but for some reason, it started working today. I have not done anything since what I described above.

Now, with that said, does IMAP have the capability to let me save all my email to my hard drive? The reason I use pop is because I have to keep emails from year to year. Also, I have to operate with very low internet speeds and I have found pop is very good at operating under those conditions.

If IMAP has that capability, I may switch to it. Thank you.

IMAP = basically all your email stays on the server, and you view it from your computer

POP = your mail downloads off the server to your machine, so if you delete it after POPping it off the server, it's gone.

I use IMAP so I can get the email from anywhere, and given the farily generous storage that Google offer, it's not really an issue for most people in terms of space.
