Thunderbird crashes IMMEDIATELY at startup, it used to be 5 secs but it's getting faster. msvcr120.dll bug 1175190
I upgraded to TB 38.0.1 about a week ago and have had nothing but problems since then. Starting last night it crashed twice but it was late and I was not inclined to fight with it at that time. This morning it crashed again. It started out crashing after about 5 seconds and during that time I managed to disable the 2 add-ons that I had, Lightning, and SmileyInserter. No change except now it is crashing immediately, it doesn't even open the display. I just get the crash notification. I have 91gb of available space. I am using a Toshiba Satellite laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I have had very few problems with TB until I upgraded to this new version. Since then I've had nothing but problems. I need this fixed or I need to be able to revert to an older version that works.

You can reinstall version 31 from https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/31.7.0/win32/en-US/
But first, please start Thunderbird in safe mode. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode Does that help?
Whether it helps or not, please post your crash IDs here in this topic. Instructions at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/mozilla-crash-reporter-tb#w_viewing-crash-reports
I forgot to tell you in my first note above that right after I disabled the two add-ons that I had in Thunderbird, I also started it in Safe Mode. There was no difference. And I did it again, just now, and it crashed immediately. I do have a partial list of the Crash Ids if that would be of any help to you. I attached a jpg file showing those file names. I would prefer to have this fixed and go forward rather than having to go back and download an old version and then have the arduous task of downloading my emails yet again on an extremely slow internet connection. The last time I did that, it took 4 days (96 hours) to download my emails. Yes, my connection is really that slow.
The first crash ID in your list is https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/0e5a7426-157f-426d-b1b8-dd2422150622
A fix has been developed, but will not be available for version 38 for approximately two weeks. Until then I suggest you download and install version 31.7.0 from http://download.cdn.mozilla.net/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/31.7.0/win32/en-US/Thunderbird%20Setup%2031.7.0.exe It should not cause your messages to redownload. However, you will need to reinstall version 3 of the calendar addon (which should not affect the calendars you are using).
I didn't know you could look at a Crash Report like that. Thanks for the info. Is there somewhere in there that tells me that a fix is awaiting release or is being worked on, or anything like that? Or is that just something that you would know?
I am in the process of downloading the 31.7.0 version and it should be finished in about an hour. Then I'll re-install it. Will I be notified when the version I have now is ready for re-install?
One last question, if the first crash report is causing the problem, why is everyone not crashing? Or are they? What makes my particular install so special? :-) Thanks for the info.

In Help | Troubleshooting the crash IDs are clickable, which will take you to the report. In the report, look for "Related Bugs" which has links to reported bugs. If there are not reported bugs or the bugs listed do not match your issue you can report it with the links provided " Report this bug in Thunderbird Core Plugins Toolkit"

Yes

I guesstimate less than 1% of the installed population is seeing this. It is unclear what is different between those who are crashing and those who are not.
Thank you for all your help and explanations. They were very helpful as I am not very techie. I re-installed version 37 and it seems to be working fine although I could not find a replacement add-on for Lightning but that's not of major importance. I guess we can mark this as closed. I'm happy to have my email working again.
If this crashes easily enough for you, would you be willing to test a development build with the patch in the next 24-48 hours? If you are available, it would be very helpful to have this confirmation.
Sorry for the late response, I was without a computer for a few days. If you still want me to test this patch, please let me know.
To test this you would need to download and install 42.0a1 from https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/nightly/latest-comm-central/ for example https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/nightly/latest-comm-central/thunderbird-42.0a1.en-US.win32.installer.exe
I downloaded the 42.0a1 version as you suggested and have been using it all morning. You can't have it back. It works really well and seems to access the Hotmail server better than the old version. No crashes and no problems at all, so far. I have a lot of emails to answer since my computer was down for a while so I'll really give it a workout over the next few days. Thanks for asking me to test this.
Thanks for your comments. I think you should find this is fixed in version 38.1.0.
Where do I go to download the 38.1.0 version or is it available for download yet?
